This print, titled Kyoto: Sanjō Great Bridge, is the final, culminating sheet of Utagawa Hiroshige's celebrated series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō. It depicts the Sanjō Ōhashi, the great bridge at Sanjō, which was the official western terminus of the Tōkaidō road and the entrance to the imperial capital of Kyoto.

The composition masterfully conveys a specific atmosphere and moment in time. Unlike a sunlit, bustling scene, Hiroshige chooses to portray the bridge in a quiet, early evening shower. The view is looking east, back the way the travelers came, with the rooftops of Kyoto visible on the left. The rain is rendered with fine, graceful vertical lines, a technique known as "rain printing" (shigure-zuri), which creates a gentle, melancholic mood.

Human activity is present but subdued. A few figures hurry across the wide bridge, huddled under umbrellas and straw raincoats. The muted color palette, dominated by soft greys, blues, and browns, enhances the feeling of a damp, tranquil dusk. This print is a perfect example of Hiroshige's genius for capturing the poetic essence of a place and a weather condition, a quality known as fūkei (lyrical landscape).

As the final stop on the long journey from Edo, this scene does not show a grand arrival but rather a quiet, reflective entrance into the ancient capital, leaving the viewer with a sense of peaceful completion.

How to clean 如何清洗
