The scene depicts the post town of Oiso during a sudden, heavy downpour. The composition is dynamic and dramatic. In the foreground, a traveler on a palanquin (kago) is being hurriedly carried by two porters, all caught in the intense rain. The diagonal lines of the rain, powerfully rendered with a technique called shigure-zuri, slash across the image, creating a strong sense of movement and immediacy.

The title, "Tora's Rain," refers to a famous tragic love story from the Noh theater and The Tale of the Heike. It tells of a woman named Tora Gozen who waited in vain at Oiso for her lover, the warrior Soga no Sukenari. Her tears of grief are said to fall eternally as rain over this area. Hiroshige brilliantly visualizes this legend, transforming a simple travel scene into a poignant depiction of sorrow and longing.

By blending a realistic scene of travelers with a classical literary allusion, Hiroshige elevates this print beyond a mere landscape. It becomes a powerful evocation of mono no aware—the Japanese aesthetic of the pathos of things, appreciating the bittersweet transience of life and emotion.

How to clean 如何清洗
